After 15 years as a math teacher and parents of five children, I saw something really new (for me) in mathematics education in the past year that really impressed me.
My (then four years) son attends a Montessori pre-school class and learned math concepts in a way that I never had the room with me, nor any of my three older children have learned.
The Montessori approach to mathematics
The Montessori mathConcept formation in the transition from concrete to abstract teaching is based, in the sense of Montessori-speak as "works", which really just manipulative.
This well-designed, highly specialized manipulative for each "mathematics" to make abstract ideas more accessible to a child.
Each new work is to introduce students have only a one-to-one lessons with the teacher.
With this individualized teaching, the teacher can be expected for each student is ready toto the next level of abstraction before launch.
Step-by-step progress
Some boys in my son (mixed age) were pre-school class to learn how to winds are still, while other types of learning place value and addition and subtraction. But younger children are doing math is also soon realized that the works are necessary to master the counting and one-to-one to do subtraction, place value and adding and.
This is aextremely important concept to remember for the children. There can be no lessons, "skipped" in the Montessori preschool mathematics curriculum, (and should not "jump" to any math curriculum, in my humble opinion in.) My son's classmates realized that mastery of each teaching materials is a goal of proficiency in mathematics. It is a wonderful approach for pre-school children's math!
mathematics lessons are fun!
From the perspective of my son"Work", used to learn math were almost like toys. He has learned not to play with them in the teacher showed him and he came away with an understanding of the mathematical concept. In the real world works are just really good concept developed mathematics education mathematics teaching manipulative that a high concentration.
There are works that teach key math skills such as education, measurement, counting, order number, the number of training one-on-one, and beyondSubtraction, and even higher mathematical concepts. Every time a new math teachers "work" of children, the skills were ready for the next math concept was the excited and thrilled to learn math, a new one. They observe and help each other, the duties of the job and to learn from their colleagues in this way. This is a great way to work, to have the mathematics of the group!
It works as a Montessori Toys
Some of these would be great math manipulative toysand "kitchen table" classes for parents, children do with their introduction of mathematical concepts at home. I was very happy with my son's math progress in the use of the Montessori School - a method of teaching mathematics, of course, had teachers of exceptional talent, but I think that many children have an advantage at home using the Montessori math manipulative al, too.
